I know there is always that discussion of whether he should be picked due to his lack of game time at Man City but Phillips played quite well last night and as shown in the Euro’s him and Rice compliment each other well in that midfield.

Having those 2 in midfield allows the likes of Bellingham & Foden to have more freedom further up to express themselves.

Was also quite impressed with Lewis Dunk. Proper old school type defender who also looks comfortable on the ball.

At least that game last night stops any more posters thinking Maguire and McTominay would have been good signings for us...

Agree with those re Southgate not giving others in the squad a run out. Baffling that he gave Kane another 80 minutes considering he will always start in competitive fixtures, it must be a waste of time for other strikers to bother turning up. Also thought this was the opportunity to give someone like Maddison a chance in a central midfield three,. Him roaming, Bellingham box to box with Rice sitting would have been a better experiment than seeing Phillips pass the ball sideways for 90 minutes!

Re: England v Jocks
that 10%, or whatever he/she is getting must be really important to Slabhead's agent/advisor. he again looked a mess when he came on, very miserable but keep those two hundred grands a week rolling in. horseface shouldn't be picking him, but he also shouldn't be picking phillips but does. players outside his clique/favourite group have little to no chance of ever getting a game

Re: England v Jocks
We have some very good depth now too, Eze and Madison are knocking on the door. Players like Sancho and Sterling aren't even making squads at the moment its mad.

I think this group can consider themselves as borderling favourites for the Euros next summer. Back in 04/06 we had a great squad whereas many others did too. Other countries seemed to have tailed off at the moment whereas we arguably have the best talent pool around

Yeah fair point about Kane's assist for Walker...... but still think he needs to be in the box more...... too many cooks and all that in midfield

El Scorchio 10:42 Wed Sep 13
Re: England v Jocks
Hit the nail in the head. Giving all the minutes to the same players- he knows what he’s got in them. He’s no idea what else he’s got. So if Kane is injured he’s dropping in players with almost no experience into big moments - Darius Vassell anyone?

Same in midfield and central defence. 1-2 injuries away from putting almost completely untested players in. It’s crazy mismanagement.

Re: England v Jocks
My theory is that Southgate is fine in small doses.

it's at the tournaments that the players get to see him every day for weeks and after a few days he ends up boring the pants off 'em instead of inspiring them to victory.

Remember to watch how our performances tail off when the competition proper starts.... .

Re: England v Jocks
Agree. Absolutely mindless not giving the new lads some minutes. What more did he learn about the old guard last night?

Hard to think of a less important game in which to risk them

Wouldn't agree that Kane's ball for Walker on Saturday was fucking useless though Rossal

Manuel 10:29 Wed Sep 13
Re: England v Jocks
Rossal - Yea add in Rice and Rashford too and it's some side. Yes we obviously can win the Euro's, but the likelihood is we will come up short again and I won't lay the blame just at Sothgate's door, as for decades now we just seem to have a big problem mentally when coming up against a real powerhouse.

Erikksen only got that era to a QF, now that is real failure.

The passing and possession tho !

Re: England v Jocks
Weird thought he puts Maguire into the fire when he has called up Tomori and Colwill..... surely you give one of them a chance?

Second why didn't Nketiah or Wilson get a start? Wilson got 9 minutes at the end over the 2 games and Nketiah not a touch. Its fucking baffling, why call him up if you won't take a look at him in a friendly?

Coupled up with the fact Kane was fucking usless across both games before his goal last night if i was Nketiah i'd fuck off and play for someone else.

Kane needs to stop playing fucking CM cos he aint touched the ball in 5 mins, stay in the fucking box, occupy defenders and wait for the service. Infuriating watching him play behind Henderson and Phillips at times.

Re: England v Jocks
Bellingham is some player and scary he has just turned 20

Could be a ballon dor winner in a few years time. With him Kane, Foden, Saka, Grealish...

This lot not winning either of the next two tournaments would be a bigger failure than Rooney, Beckham, Gerrard etc of 2004/2006

El Scorchio 9:51 Wed Sep 13
Re: England v Jocks
Sad thing is that while we can win the euros with Bellingham and this side, the manager is really holding them back. Especially in defence where he almost stubbornly refuses to give anyone a go and sticking too faithfully to players who are either past their prime or not playing regularly enough to compete at the highest level.

Wanstead, that's the whole Southgate ethos, safety first

If he was an activist he'd be Greta Thunberg

The bloke reeks a limp wristed attitude

Re: England v Jocks
Second half I was thinking we could step this up, play some decent football and get more goals. Oh no, we proceed to knock it back and forth across the back for what seemed like an eternity and actually didn't step it up till they scored. Why can't we even have a go when we're 2 up in a friendly

Even more seriously than I’ve been so far tonight, young Bellingham is already some player''

That is a gross understatement, he is an extraordinary player, got the lot. Easily one of the best players in the world right now and he's only 20, taken to Real Madrid like a walk in the park and now dominating England games. England can win the Euro's with this kid, absolutely no doubt about it.

. . bottled coming to England?

You've gotta be kidding! The only player in that England team who bottled anything, was Rice when he chose l'il 'ol Arsenal.

Maguire had more shots on England's goal than Scotland

You have to know when to take life or me seriously.

Even more seriously than I’ve been so far tonight, young Bellingham is already some player, and if he keeps his head on his shoulders and his feet on the ground and his nose to the grindstone, he really could make the difference at the highest level.

Once again England has a lot of real potential. Can the Waistcoat use it to its potential? I fear not……BFS could do a job, though. If the FA can swallow their pride……..

Re: England v Jocks
At points England have looked good, and at others turgid. Personally dont think Southgate will win anything. If Bellingham can avoid injury and continues developing he could drag England over the line in the big knockout games.

All joking apart Harry Maguire's confidence has to be in tatters.
